Briana Scurry was the first African-American player and goalkeeper to be inducted into the US Soccer Hall of Fame.
This partly reflects the brief history of women's soccer in the USA (first official team in 1985), but also the lack of diversity in the game.
This problem has only recently begun to be rectified with the increased participation of black players at all levels. Once the only black woman, Briana has enabled young black girls to see themselves as leading players who could one day represent their country or pursue a professional career. She is best known for her crucial save in the 1999 World Cup final against China, which resulted in victory for the USA. She also took part in three World Cups and two Olympic Games (both winning gold medals), and was a founding member of the Women's Soccer Association. She retired in 2010 with 175 caps and 72 shutouts.
